Introduction

OpenFilm turns a coding agent into a video agent. You ask Claude Code, Codex or any agent that can run a command for a video; it writes the film; you watch it and change anything by hand in OpenFilm Studio.

How it works

A film is a folder:

  • film.html holds the edit: which clips play, where and when, and how each looks (CSS). It is a web page too. Studio changes it when you trim a clip or move a title.
  • Film pages (*.html) draw the shots. A page is a web page with one function, frame(t), that draws the moment t. Anything a browser can draw works: CSS, SVG, canvas, WebGL.
  • assets/ holds your footage, music, voice and images.

Because a film is plain files, it can be read, versioned, copied and changed like code, by you or by any agent.

What you need

  • Node.js 22 or later.
  • A coding agent: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenCode or any other that runs shell commands.

No account is needed to make, edit or render films. An OpenFilm account is only for generated voice, music, images and video, and you can use your own services instead.

Where to go next

  • Quickstart: your first film in a few minutes.
  • Studio: watching and editing by hand.
  • Pricing: what is free, and what an OpenFilm account costs.
  • CLI: every command.
  • Agent manual: what your agent reads.
  • Spec: the film format, for anyone building tools.
