Getting started
Services
OpenFilm is free and runs on your computer. The agent that writes your film and the services that make voice, music, images and video are your choice: you sign in to them or use your own keys, and pay them directly. Nothing goes through OpenFilm.
Agents
Any coding agent that can run a command works. Most can use a subscription you already have:
- Claude Code with a Claude plan, or an Anthropic API key.
- Codex with a ChatGPT plan, or an OpenAI API key.
- GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Qwen Code, Kimi, CodeBuddy and others.
The desktop app finds the agents installed on your computer. It can also run an agent on any key for the OpenAI or Anthropic API, or for a service that speaks them, such as OpenRouter, DeepSeek or a model on your own machine: Settings → Agents → Own key.
Media
openfilm get and Studio make media with the services you connect in Studio (Settings → Providers):
| Service | What it makes |
|---|---|
| ElevenLabs | voice-over, sound effects, music, transcripts |
| fal | images, video, music, sound effects |
| Google (Gemini) | voice-over, images, video, subtitle translation |
| Groq | voice-over, transcripts |
| OpenAI | voice-over, images, transcripts, subtitle translation |
| Pexels, Pixabay | stock photos (image search) |
| Brave Search, Tavily | web search, and reading web pages |
Each kind of media works once a service that makes it is connected. Paste a key in Studio, or set it in your environment: ELEVENLABS_API_KEY, FAL_KEY, GEMINI_API_KEY, GROQ_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY, PEXELS_API_KEY, PIXABAY_API_KEY, BRAVE_API_KEY, TAVILY_API_KEY. Keys stay on your computer.
Media can come from anywhere else too. Your agent can call any service with its API docs and your key, or make it with code, and save it under assets/.
Without any service
Making, editing and rendering films needs no service at all. Pages are web pages, so titles, motion graphics, charts and anything a browser draws cost nothing, and your own footage, music and photos go in assets/.
